Expense Split – Manual
Help right on the screen
The question mark in the top bar opens help for the screen you are on. It shows what you can do here — tap a step and the app does it for you. A step that is not possible right now is shown together with the reason.
Instead of typing you can tap the microphone in the question field and ask out loud. The phone does the recognition and listens in the language of your keyboard; on Android 14 and newer it tries to recognise the language from your speech, so you can speak Czech in an English app.
You can type your own question in the field at the top. As you type, the app searches this manual and shows the sections that mention it — tap one and the manual opens right at that place. Accents are ignored and the beginning of a word is enough: "lang" finds "Language". When the manual in the app language finds nothing, the manual in other languages is searched too.
After you send a question (the blue arrow) you always see an answer: your question repeated, who answers, and the steps on the screen that match it. Without AI the help answers from the screen's steps and from this manual; when it finds nothing, it says so and offers to turn on the AI help, which can answer free questions.
App tour
On the first run you pick the language and the text size, answer the question about bug reports, and then the app walks you through it: first it says what the tour shows and how long it takes, then the screen dims, one spot is highlighted and you read what it is for. Every step has the heading Tour · step X of N. Next moves on, Skip the tour ends the whole introduction.
You can run it again any time from Settings -> Show the tour again or from help (the question mark) -> Take the app tour. The tour then starts right away, without the intro page.
Groups, expenses and settling up
The start screen is the list of your groups. Each one shows how many people are in it, how many transfers are still left and whether you are owed something or owe. The New group button creates another one, and the Add expense button on a card records an expense straight away, without opening the group.
Adding an expense
Type the amount, what it was for if you like, pick who paid and who shares it. The default is an equal share. The Exact amounts switch lets you type an amount for everybody; saving works once the amounts add up to the amount of the expense. After saving a message appears with the Undo button, which deletes the expense.
Big keypad for the amount
In Settings -> Expert settings you can turn on the big keypad for the amount: bigger buttons to type with one hand. It holds for the whole app; the description of an expense is always typed on the keyboard of the phone. The keypad is docked at the bottom and stays in view while you type the amount; it goes away when you move to another field or tap Back. With the phone held upright, the Save button always stays in view.
Settling up
The Settle up button shows who should send how much to whom. When you send money, record Paid: the payment waits for the recipient to confirm it and changes no balance until then. When somebody gave you money, record I received. A payment between two other people in the group, for example from a bank statement, is written with Write a payment between others: pick who paid and whom, the amount and the date. Such a payment counts at once and changes both balances.
Sharing the summary
The Share summary button on the overview of a group shows a text with the balances and the suggested settlement and opens the system sharing. You choose who gets the text; the app sends nothing to anybody.
Settings
Appearance
Light, dark, or follow the phone. Black (OLED) is dark with a pure black background — it saves battery on OLED screens and is easier on the eyes at night. The change applies immediately.
Text size
On the first run you choose how big the text should be (Smaller, Normal, Larger, Largest) — the whole screen changes right away. Later you change it in Settings → Text size. The choice multiplies the text size set on the phone and applies to dialogs, the tour and this manual too.
App language
The app asks on first launch; later you can change the language in Settings. Your data stays as it is.
My account for settling up
In Settings → My account for settling up you type the account number (for example 19-2000145399/0800) or the IBAN you want to receive money on. The app checks that the number is right and says why when it is not. The account is kept only on this phone, encrypted, and is never sent anywhere by itself: not to a server, not to a group. Signing out does not delete it. An empty field forgets the account.
Exporting my data
In Settings → Export my data you get one file with everything the app holds about you: your groups and participants, expenses and payments including deleted ones, the history of their changes and your account for settling up. What somebody else wrote is in separate parts of the file, and the accounts of other members are not in it. You can lock the file with a password. The export runs in the background and shows a notification; you save the finished file yourself, the app sends it nowhere.
AI help
In Settings -> AI help you can let a language model advise you. The app needs your own key to one of the services (Google Gemini, Groq, OpenRouter) - create it on their page, paste it into Settings and it stays encrypted on your phone.
When the model is off or cannot be reached, the app advises on its own from what is on the screen. So you always get help, even without the internet.
What is sent to the service: the screen description (title, purpose, which actions are possible and which are not), a snippet of the manual matching your question, and the question itself. The content you store in the app is not sent.
An answer from the model carries the label "Answer generated by AI" with the service name. Rule-based advice does not.
Reporting an AI answer
If an AI answer is offensive, inappropriate or factually wrong, tap Report answer below it. Pick a reason, optionally add what is wrong, and the report goes to the developer - without leaving the app. What is sent: your question, the AI answer, the service and model name, the reason and the app version; never the API key. The same consent as for bug reports applies: if diagnostics sending is off, the app offers to turn it on, and if the app has no sending at all, it offers sharing.
When something does not work
Shake the phone
A bug report opens. Choose whether it is a bug, an idea or a question, type (or dictate) what happened and tap the blue arrow. You then see a preview of everything that will be sent: your message, the screenshot (tap to enlarge; you can remove it) and what else is attached. Only the Send report button sends it. An open dialog shows in the screenshot too; your content and secret codes (the recovery code, its QR) are covered with a dark box, and the preview shows exactly the covered picture that will be sent.
Your message is never lost: tapping beside the dialog first asks whether to discard it, and the text is kept as a draft as you write (encrypted on the phone). It is deleted only after the report is really sent. When report sending is off, nothing is sent; when you send, the app offers to turn it on.
You can turn shaking off in Settings → Diagnostics. The report also opens with the "Report a bug now" button.
Automatic crash reports
When the app crashes or freezes, it can send a technical record of the error — only if you allow it. It includes a random installation code so the reports can be deleted on request (you will find it in Settings). No screenshot, no form content, no passwords and no IP address. Nothing is sent on an ordinary start. You can change your consent in Settings at any time.
What data the app sends
What you store in the app stays on the phone. Only this leaves it:
- an automatic crash report, if you allow it — without a screenshot,
- a report you write — only after the preview that shows everything that goes, including a screenshot you can remove,
- a question to the AI help, only when you turn it on with your own key (screen description, a bit of the manual and your question),
- a reported AI answer, when you report one.
When report sending is off, nothing is sent. The app adds no personal data (name, e-mail, IP address) to reports. The Privacy policy describes it in detail.
Deleting reports
Settings shows your installation ID. All your reports can be found and deleted by it — you send the request by e-mail right from the app.
Updates
It depends on where you got the app:
- From Google Play — Google Play takes care of updates, nothing to do in the app.
- From the download page — once a day the app checks whether a newer version is out and tells you with a notification. You download it in Settings → Updates.
When installing from the download page, Android first asks whether you allow the app to install updates. With each new version, Play Protect may also offer a scan — the app is not from Google Play, so Google does not know it yet. Continue by installing without scanning. You always confirm the installation yourself; nothing is installed silently.
FAQ
Does the app need the internet?
Not for everyday use. The internet is only needed to check for updates and to send reports, if you allow it.
Where do I find the app version?
Settings → About. The version matters when reporting a bug — it shows whether the bug is not already fixed in a newer version.
